Kerun China: Pioneering the Future | Spinal Minimally Invasive Innovation Forum and Vertebroplasty Angled-Technique Symposium – Yangtze River Delta Station

On June 20, 2021, the “Kerun China: Pioneering the Future with Minimally Invasive Spinal Techniques” Innovative Forum on Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery and the Yangtze River Delta Symposium on Angled Vertebroplasty Technology were successfully held at the Pullman Zhouzhuang Hotel in the picturesque water town of Zhouzhuang. Renowned spinal surgery experts from the Yangtze River Delta region gathered to exchange experiences, engage in intellectual dialogue, and share scholarly insights.

 

This symposium was chaired by Professor He Shisheng from the Tenth People’s Hospital of Tongji University. Presentations were delivered by Professors Zhang Hailong from the Putuo People’s Hospital of Tongji University, Yang Chunlei from the Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Zhao Yingchuan from the Tenth People’s Hospital of Tongji University, Long Zuolin from Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University, Xie Ning from Tongji Hospital of Tongji University, and Zhang Yuhui from Renji Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Panelists for the on-site discussion included Professors Jiang Shengdan from Xinhua Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Wu Yujie and Sun Xiaojiang from the Ninth People’s Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Professor Huang Kai from the Zhabei District Central Hospital of Shanghai, Professor Zhao Qinghua from the First People’s Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Professor Meng Dehua from Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University.

 

 

Professor He Shisheng from the Tenth People’s Hospital affiliated with Tongji University delivered the opening address at this conference. In his remarks, Professor He outlined a promising future for minimally invasive spinal surgery in China, highly commended the significant importance of Huake Run Company’s organization of this technical exchange on angled vertebral body augmentation, and expressed his hope that more high-quality academic events will be held in the future.

The seminar commenced with an exchange on the theoretical research surrounding the angled vertebral augmentation technique. Professor Zhang Hailong reviewed the evolution of vertebral augmentation technologies and presented his study, “Theory and Technique of Angled Percutaneous Kyphoplasty (PCKP),” providing a detailed account of the clinical considerations and key procedural steps associated with this technique. In his presentation, “Theory and Practical Experience in Angled Percutaneous Vertebroplasty (PCVP),” Professor Yang Chunlei focused on an overview and development of PVP, an analysis of the etiology of vertebral compression fractures, and the refined angled percutaneous vertebroplasty technique (PCVP). Meanwhile, Professor Zhao Yingchuan delivered a talk titled “Controversies and Pitfalls in the Use of Vertebral Augmentation Techniques for Treating Vertebral Compression Fractures,” in which he discussed the pathogenesis and clinical implications of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, as well as the indications, contraindications, efficacy, and ongoing controversies surrounding PVP and PKP for the treatment of OVCF.

 

 

Focusing on the clinical application of angled vertebroplasty, Professor Long Zuo-lin delivered a presentation titled “Application of Angled Vertebroplasty in Complex Thoracolumbar Fractures,” in which he reviewed the historical development and indications of vertebroplasty and presented and discussed four representative cases. Professor Xie Ning then gave a specialized talk on “Application of Angled Vertebroplasty and Study of Bone Cement Distribution,” using comparative analysis of typical cases to demonstrate that, following the use of angled vertebroplasty, bone cement distribution is more uniform, vertebral loading is better balanced, and both mechanical stability and long-term therapeutic outcomes are improved. Finally, Professor Zhang Yu-hui shared his research topic, “Preliminary Experience with PCVP for Treating Kümmell’s Disease,” elaborating on the efficacy of using angled techniques in the treatment of Kümmell’s disease.

 

 

During the discussion session following the two thematic chapters, Professors Jiang Shengdan, Wu Yujie, Sun Xiaojiang, Huang Kai, Zhao Qinghua, and Meng Dehua, along with other attendees at the event, engaged in a lively exchange on hot topics such as the prevention and management of vertebroplasty complications and the key technical points of unilateral puncture, jointly exploring clinical experience with the use of angled-needle vertebroplasty. The experts reached a consensus: angled-needle vertebroplasty can effectively reduce surgical risk, shorten the learning curve, and facilitate the wider adoption and dissemination of the technique; compared with conventional instruments, it offers significant advantages in restoring vertebral height and maintaining spinal mechanical stability; moreover, the technique has a broad range of applications, being suitable not only for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures but also for conditions such as Kümmell’s disease and vertebral hemangiomas.
