Mastering Intelligent Technology, Pioneering the Future | The Intelligent Woodpecker Miniature Spinal Surgery Robot Has Been Granted NMPA Class III Medical Device Registration Certification
Recently, the spinal surgery navigation and positioning system developed by Zhongou Zhiwei (Shanghai) Robot Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Huake Run, has officially passed the National Medical Products Administration’s (NMPA) registration application for innovative medical devices and has been granted a Class III medical device registration certificate.

Previously, the Intelligent Woodpecker Miniature Spinal Surgery Robot (proposed application name: Spinal Surgery Navigation and Positioning System) successfully passed the Special Review Application for Innovative Medical Devices at the National Medical Products Administration’s Center for Medical Device Technical Review in February 2024, becoming the first miniature orthopedic surgical robot in China to enter the innovative medical device green channel. Leveraging differentiated technological features and a user-friendly product design, the Intelligent Woodpecker Robot effectively addresses the practical needs of clinical users, boasting performance advantages such as precision, miniaturization, intelligence, and high efficiency. It supports a wide range of minimally invasive spinal surgical procedures, providing comprehensive robot-assisted surgical solutions for clinical practice.

Micro-
One of the world’s smallest orthopedic surgical robots, this system integrates a navigation module, robotic arm, and control system into a single cart, occupying only 0.32 square meters. This design significantly reduces the footprint required in the operating room and storage areas, while enabling rapid deployment across multiple surgical suites. The robotic arm is palm-sized and weighs as little as 1.63 kg, with simple and quick installation, thereby substantially optimizing the available workspace during surgery.
Precision
The system’s ultra-high-precision positioning capability, with an accuracy of 0.2 mm, and its advanced algorithms further enhance the minimally invasive nature, precision, and success rate of surgery. A fully visualized workflow and dedicated surgical instruments provide comprehensive support throughout the entire procedure, ensuring that every step of the surgical plan is executed with pinpoint accuracy—down to the finest detail.
Efficient
An innovative “range-based positioning + precision localization” model, combined with auxiliary planning features, effectively reduces operative time. Planning and positioning for a single pedicle screw takes only one minute, and the entire system can be assembled and disassembled in just over ten minutes, thanks to a streamlined and seamless workflow that makes surgery easy to manage.
Intelligent
Equipped with intelligent algorithms that are highly aligned with clinical surgical workflows, the system can assist in performing extensive planning and predictive tasks, effectively reducing procedural complexity and the need for extensive experience, thereby significantly shortening the learning curve. At the same time, the intelligent system boasts robust scalability, opening up limitless possibilities for the integration of innovative features and new application scenarios.

To advance the intelligent management of orthopedic surgical consumables and drive innovation in surgical techniques, Huake Run and Sino-European Zhiwei have jointly launched the [IDEAS³ Smart Cube] Intelligent Digital Ecosystem of Advanced Spinal Surgical Solutions, with the Smart Woodpecker Miniature Spinal Surgery Robot at its core. Leveraging cross-modal image fusion, intelligent surgical planning, and multi-platform positioning guidance technologies, the [IDEAS³ Smart Cube] empowers both active and passive surgical instruments as well as implantable devices. In a wide range of spinal surgery scenarios—including vertebroplasty, endoscopic decompression and fusion, and pedicle screw fixation for the entire spine—the system delivers a more precise, intuitive, and efficient operative experience for clinicians, thereby closing the loop between product systems and clinical needs. The approval of the Smart Woodpecker Miniature Spinal Surgery Robot will further accelerate the [IDEAS³ Smart Cube] ecosystem’s transition into clinical practice.
With the rapid advancement of digital technologies, orthopedic surgery is accelerating toward minimally invasive, precision-driven, and intelligent approaches. The development and market launch of the Intelligent Woodpecker Robot are a direct response to this evolving demand and a testament to our commitment to meeting it. By fostering the integration of medicine and engineering and championing indigenous innovation, Huake Run and Zhongou Zhiwei remain steadfast in their mission: to derive insights from clinical research and translate them into clinical applications, delivering more advanced surgical solutions that elevate the standard of care, promote the equitable distribution of high-quality healthcare resources, and ultimately benefit patients nationwide.
